Already at the age of 17, in 1914, he reported as a volunteer to the 9. Ulanenregiment, with which he takes part in the fighting on the Eastern Front, where, thanks to his excellent rating, he is selected as an officer-in-waiting and promoted to the rank of Leutnant in August 1916. In 1918 he is transferred to the Western Front and wounded in one gas attack. He is sent to the reserves in 1920, but rejoins the Reichswehr in 1924. After completing several courses at military schools, Baade receives his first command post - he becomes a squadron commander in the Kavallerie-Regiment 3.
At the beginning of World War II, Baade is promoted to the rank of Major in Aufklärungs-Abteilung 17. At the end of post ť, Baade is promoted to the rank of Oberstleutnant in February 1940 and is appointed as Commander I. Abteilung in Reiter-Regiment 22, with which he participates in the Western ťation. During the fighting for La Rochelle in June 1940, he is ťseverely wounded and does not return to the unit until mid-1941, subsequently taking command of Kradschützenbataillon 4 in December of the same year.
A further promotion follows on 16.3.1942, when he receives the rank of Oberst Oberst and at the same time is transferred to Africa to 15. Panzer-Division, where he assumes command of Schützen-Regiment 115. In June 1942, his regiment is involved in ťup defensive battles, during which Oberst Baade leads many successful counterattacks - for example, his regiment's attack at Bir Hacheim has become famous. For the successful capture of this fortress he is awarded the Knight's Cross on 27 June 1942. A few weeks later, Baade is wounded by a shell splinter during the fighting for El Alamein and has to beť airlifted to a hospital in Rome.
After recovering, he is posted to the High Command of the Italian Army, where he serves as a staff officer to the German Generalkommando. After the Allied landings in Sicily and the subsequent German retreat, Baade is made commander of the "Messina-Straße" in May 1943, and is subsequently given responsibility for the evacuation of German troops from Sicily. During ďfurther retreat fighting in Italy, Baade takes command in November 1943 as acting commanderľ 15. Panzergrenadier-Division and at the same time also commands the 90. Panzergrenadier-Division during the ťup major fighting in Monte Casino. On 22 February 1944, he is awarded the Oak Branches to the Knight's Cross for his personal bravery during the ťs battles. In March 1944 he is promoted to the rank of Major General, while ďanother promotion comes just half a year later, on 20.9.1944, when he is promoted to the rank of Generalleutnant after ťup to a number of defensive battles in Sacco-Tal. For the exploits of his 90. Panzergrenadier-Division, he is awarded the Knight's Cross with oak branchesťa and swords on 16 November 1944. In the spring of 1945 he is sent to the Commanding Generals Course and in March returns to the front as Commanding General LXXXI. Armeekorps. Towards the end of the war, Baade is dňa 5.4.1945 during a tour of duty ťonly slightly wounded in an attack by an Allied fighter-bomber. He dies deň before the end of the war in a hospital in Bad Segeberg.
