The LMG 08/15 was an air-cooled aerial variant of the MG 08/15. LMG stands for Luft Maschinen Gewehr. The water cooler was replaced by a perforated heat dissipating jacket. The stock and pistol grip were also removed from the machine gun, and the trigger was transferred in the form of a button on the aircraft control stick. A massive breech tension lever was installed on the right side of the breech housing to allow pilots to clear a malfunction in the event of a jam. A 500-round belt was supplied as standard.

This version appeared sometime during 1915. At that time, the original MG 08/15 with a water cooler was apparently still installed on some aircraft, but without a cooling cartridge.

Combined with the Fokker synchronizer Zentralsteuerung, it was the standard synchronized weapon of the German Air Force during World War I. The machine gun was very reliable and had a good synchronisation cadence.

Under the name Spandau, after the town where the machine gun was manufactured, it gained considerable notoriety. It gained another nickname, the British began to call it the "Devil's Brush" after the lines of the glowing ammunition with which it "drew" across the sky.
