Georges Felix Madonnas was one of the longest serving and most experienced pilots of the French fighter force, and with 41 confirmed victories and one of the most successful.

Childhood[/heading]
He was born in Bizertě, in Tunisia and has from his youth devoted himself to the sport, despite his small stature he was always flat and extremely strong, boxed and played football.
For the first time became interested in aviation in 15 years when he tried (unsuccessfully) to build their own flying machine. He had to quit school because of malaria. After the construction of the models and the dragons, fashioned bicycle plane "aviette".
His desire for flying led him to the Ottoman empire, where he wanted to become a pilot. When that failed, applied the 1. intenýrského regiment at Versailles and ended up as a cook. Still but asked for reassignment to the pilot training.

Air service[/heading]
After 19 lessons in June 1911 he became a qualified pilot. 12. march 1912, volunteered for the French army and received a pilot's license in January 1913 in the Avord. Even though he was only a corporal, he was one of the nezkušenějších of French military pilots. Initially he flew on reconnaissance missions and night bombing on the pre-war Blériotech at the Escadrille BL 30. Night missions, they were one of the first and his experience with him to these missions probably singled. They actually saved his life, when 30. October 1914 was the engine of his aircraft destroyed by the direct intervention of the guns of 77 mm. It required a superhuman effort to glide with Bleriotem against the wind back to their own lines.
In April 1915 the influence of a strong fog to swerve off course and flew into Swiss airspace, when zalétával Farman with the latest, 80-horsepower engine and was being held here after a few months. After two escape attempts he managed to finally to free in December, when chloroform drugged and kidnapped his střáž. After returning to own was built before the court and received 60 days in jail.
After odpikání punishment he was transferred to Escadrille MF 218 as a sergeant managing artillery fire. Request a transfer to a fighter squadron.
After retraining at Pau and Cazaux, he was 1. November 1916 transferred to the N 38 where he had to fly with the Nieuport. His first victory earned the 28. November. The end of the year your score up at four and got a big promotion to lieutenant.
The new year started by being forced to stop enemy locomotive. Later, 2. July 1917, he was wounded in action when he collided with an enemy aircraft and crashed. Then I had to its credit 12 wins. The following month, he was promoted to lieutenant commander. In October it was his score of 17 confirmed and 20 unconfirmed kills. 3 times returned to the base with a propeller covered in blood and the remains of the brain, another is a home brought in the rope of his wings glasses of an enemy observer.
To march, 1918, amounted to his score 25 confirmed victories. He was offered the command of Escadrille SPA 38, which was newly equipped with new Spad XIII. although this is the photographic reconnaissance unit, aggressively fought back. They lived according to the motto of their leader "whoever is against me scraped out with popíchá". Also, you hijacked his personal marking - black thistle on their aircraft.
The next part of his new position was the leadership of the other pilots, who have already become aces because of his tutelage; among these were Andre Martenot De Cordou, Hector Garaud, and american David Putman.
The end of the war, was on account of the 41 confirmed and 64 unconfirmed kills. regarding the unconfirmed once aptly noted: "Jerry's know their loss." Even so, his score ranked at a 4. place between the French air aces, just behind the "horseman of death" by Charles Nungesser (43 p.).
Ironically, he was promoted to temporary captain on the last day of the war. At the time when the lifespan of pilots was measured in months, his win streak was stretched to two and a half years. With seven years of aviation experience, this was at the end of the war one of the most experienced pilots in the world.

After the war[/heading]
Madonnas remained in flying after the end of the war. In 1922 participated in the air races of the Coupe-Deutsch, the pilot of a radically designed racing monoplane. Simplexův monoplane, the engine had a Hispano-Suiza on the performance of 320 hp (240 kW), stuffed into his short fuselage; pilot had a very limited perspective due to his establishment for the tubular radiator. Madonnas with this aircraft crashed during a test flight and suffered several serious injuries.
Exactly six years after the end of the war 11. November 1924, he died in his native Tunisia in its preparations for the commemoration of the former pilot Roland Garros. His plane suffered mechanical problems, and with him fell on the roof of a villa than to the onlookers of the audience.
He was 32 years old.
