Fatih (155mm samohybná houfnice, prototyp)

Unknown project of the Turkish howitzers

Dear,
during the search for information about the Turkish self-propelled guns I came across a link to that in the nineties of the last century was developed a howitzer with the name Fatih.

Based on the photos I assume, that the Turkish designers were inspired by the chassis of the north american howitzers M108/109, which had furnished a large maybe partially rotating turrets. Drive unit and transmission have been the prototype assembled from the discarded the M48 tank. The vehicle was armed with a modified west German howitzer known from M109A3G.

During the military test, the prototype was found wanting for instability during the ride, a kind of unspecified technical difficulty and for the unsatisfactory performances of the howitzer. The development of Fatihy has been terminated and the Turkish army decided to purchase a production license proven south Korean technology.
