V roce 1907 proběhly v USA armádní zkoušky na výběr nové pistole pro US Army. Testů se zúčastnila firma Colt se zbraní Colt Model 1907, německá firma DWM s pistolí P.07 (odvozenou od P08 Parabellum) a americká firma Savage se svou pistolí Savage Automatic Pistol Model 1907. Z testů nakonec vyšel vítězně Colt a výsledkem bylo zavedení Coltu M1911 do výzbroje US Army.

Colt M1911, oproti pozdější variantě M1911A1 se liší rovným hřbetem rukojeti, nezkoseným rámem za lučíkem a jiným palečníkem. Rozměry a hmotnost jsou stejné.
