Sd.Kfz.234 in the Czechoslovak Army


After the end of World War II, these heavy eight-wheeled vehicles were found on Czechoslovak territory in all designs, including rarities and versions probably unknown in German vehicle typology.


Immediately after the end of the war, one vehicle Sd.Kfz.234/3 captured by the Prague insurgents was deployed as part of the 1st Platoon, 3rd Company, 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Area, in guarding the North Bohemian border area (7-8/1945). The vehicle bore the designation ÚV-456. After the division of the 1st Battalion into 21st Tank Brigade and 22nd Tank Brigade, the vehicle was lost from the records. However, as of 2/2/1946, one Sd.Kfz. 234 vehicle is listed as 22nd Tank Brigade in Hodonin where it lasted until the unit was disbanded in 5/1949. However, it is questionable whether this was the original ÚV-456 vehicle. There are records of a pair of repaired Sd.Kfz.234 in AZ 1 in Přelouč from where they may have been sent to 22nd Tank Brigade where they served and later received registration numbers 75.938 and 75.939. In early 5/1949 they were transferred to 11th Tank Brigade, where they were still as of 9/1950. These were one vehicle of the Sd.Kfz.234/1 version and one vehicle of the Sd.Kfz.234/3 or Sd.Kfz.234/4 version.


Dozens of vehicles were acquired in the 1947 and 1948 trophy collections. Mr. Frantsev - the author of the source states that there were unknown vehicles (radio, mortar and anti-aircraft). In its 1948 study, the Panzer Command considered the inclusion of these armoured vehicles in the status of divisional reconnaissance detachments. The soldiers were willing to repair the highly prized vehicles, but the Tatra company was reluctant to undertake repairs and AZ 1 did not have the necessary capacity. After a payload inspection in Milovice on 15 July 1949, it was decided to repair 65 eight-wheeled vehicles (including the older Sd.Kfz.231 - Sd.kfz.232 - Sd.Kfz.233) out of the total number of available eight-wheeled vehicles.) 45 Sd.Kfz.234 vehicles (26 Sd.Kfz.234/1, 8 Sd.Kfz.234/2, 7 Sd.Kfz.234, 7 Sd.Kfz.234/3 and two Sd.Kfz.234/4 and one vehicle of unknown anti-aircraft version with 2 cm Flak 38). The remaining twenty vehicles, including all the older vehicles of the Sd.Kfz.231 series, were to be cancelled.
However, only one vehicle, the Sd.Kfz.234, was repaired in 1950, and that was a typologically unknown version with an anti-aircraft gun. In early 1950, 59 Sd.Kfz. 234 vehicles were offered to the Ministry of National Security for the National Security Corps and the Border Guard. However, the repair of the vehicles was to be provided from the MNB budget. Due to lack of funds, this offer was rejected. Due to the closure of the AZ 1 branch in Milovice, it was decided to cancel all these vehicles. The Tatra engines were sold to Mototechna (they could be used in Tatra 111 trucks). The other material ended up in scrap yards. In 1951 this type was liquidated.
However, one vehicle was subjected to military tests in 1952.
One vehicle starred in the 1956 film The Undefeated.
