V rámci generálnej opravy v rokoch 1957-1958 bol trup ponorky predĺžený o 8,23 m a pôvodný pohon nahradili 3 10-valcové vznetové motory. Trup bol opäť predĺžený v roku 1962 (o 4,6 m?) po zabudovaní nového sonaru BQG-4 PUFFS.
Za službu vo Vietname bola ponorka ocenená 4 bojovými hviezdami.
Dňa 17.08.1987 predaná do Turecka, kde slúžila pod menom TCG Pirireis (S-343). Zo služby u tureckého námorníctva bola vyradená v auguste 2004. Po vyradení sa ponorka stala exponátom múzea pri tureckej ponorkovej základni v Izmire.

During overhaul in 1957 - 1958, Tang had her hull lengthened 9 feet to enable the installation of the new 10-cylinder engines that replaced the original "pancake" type engines. With the addition of the newly developed Passive Underwater Fire-control Feasibility System (PUFFS) in a 1962, Tang's hull was stretched once again (15 feet?).
Tang was awarded 4 battle stars for service in Vietnam with the U. S. Navy.
Transferred (sale) to Turkey on 17 August 1987. TCG Pirireis (S-343), ex-Tang continued to serve in the Turkish Submarine Forces until she was Decommissioned in August 2004. TCG Pirireis is maintained as a museum ship near the Turkish Submarine base at Izmir,Turkey.
