Erich Abraham enters the army as a volunteer on 4.8.1914 and as of 11.7.1915 serves in Infanterie-Regiment 341 with the rank of Leutnant der Reserve. When he is discharged from the army on 20.5.1920, he has the rank of Oberleutnant.
After his discharge from the army, he joins the police and is assigned to the Sicherheits-Polizei with the rank of Leutnant.
He returns to the army on 15.10.1935, when, at the rank of Major, he becomes a company commander in Infanterie-Regiment 18. A year later - on 6.10.1936 he is already commander of the 1st /Infanterie-Regiment 105 and on 1.10.1938 he is promoted to the rank of Oberstleutnant. On 21.11.1939 he takes command of II./Infanterie-Regiment 266. Between 1.4.1940 and 31.3.1942, as well as between 6.6.1942 and 6.11.1942 he commands Infanterie-Regiment 230, meanwhile on 1.9.1941 he is promoted to the rank of Oberst. For his regiment's achievements in the fighting north of Stalingrad, he is awarded the Knight's Cross (Ritterkreuz) on 13.11.1942, and at the same time the Infantry Assault Badge (Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen).
Since 15.1.1943 he is the commander of the Commanders' School II for officers-in-waiting (Kommandeurs-Schule II für Offiziers-Anwärter) but as early as 1.4.1943 he takes over the command of the 76th Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen. Infanterie-Division, of which he is the commander until 1.6.1944. On 26.6.1944 he is decorated with oak branches (Eichenlaub). On 1.8.1944 he is given command of the VI. rumänischen Armeekorps, immediately after that he commands Korpsstab Abraham from 21 August/October. Three days later he is transferred to the Commanding Generals Course and on 14 September 1944 he is given command of Gruppe Abraham, which is formed by 76. Infanterie-Division and the 2. ungar. Ersatz-Division. On 27 September 1944 he is reappointed commander of the 76. Infanterie-Division, which he commands only until 11.10.1944, when he takes command of the renewed Gruppe Abraham, consisting this time of 76. Infanterie-Division, the ungar. 12. Res-Division and the ungar. Kommandant Großwardein. Already on 21 October 1944, however, he is transferred to the Führer-Reserve, to be appointed on 13 December 1944 as acting commander of the LXIII. Armeekorps. Since 1 March 1945 he has been Commanding General (Kommandier General) of the LXIII. Armeekorps. At the end of the war he is taken prisoner, from which he is released on 17 August 1947.
