Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy and Albanian, Emperor of Ethiopia

(1869 - 1947)

He came from the Savoy dynasty, was the prince of Naples, the son of the king Umberto I. and after his assassination in 1900 he ascended the Italian throne. As early as 1896, he married a Montenegrin princess. He maintained good relations with Serbia, France and Great Britain, despite Italy's alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary in the Trojspolk.

After the outbreak of the First World War he maintained neutrality, but after secret negotiations and receiving the promise of South Tyrol, Istria, Trieste and Zadar, he decided to enter in 1915 wars on the side of the Agreement.

After the war, the king felt cheated by the other victorious powers because many promises were not kept. He was bothered by the disruption in the country and the threat of the Bolshevik revolution. Therefore, he supported the fascist movement and after the so-called march on Rome in 1922, he even appointed a fascist leader Mussolini Prime Minister. Under the fascist regime, he had virtually no influence - only a statutory figure. In 1936 he became Emperor of Ethiopia and in 1939 King of Albania.

In 1943, he had Mussolini arrested and imprisoned at the suggestion of the Great Fascist Council. He appointed the former Chief of Staff - General Pietro Badoglia, who concluded an armistice with the Allies and declared war on Germany. After the entry of Allied troops into Rome, the king handed over power to his son Umbert II. and went into exile in Egypt, where he died on December 28, 1947 .
