In the summer of 1926 Dipl. Ing. Heinrich Ernst Kniepkamp was commissioned to prepare a study and requirements for an artillery tractor for towing artillery guns. Over a period of three years he compared German agricultural tractors with American and British Scammel tractors. He then drew up specifications for a new tractor. The requirement was for the ability to tow a load of 8 tons on the road at a maximum speed of 50 km/h and with a range of 200-250 km. The vehicle had to be able to tow this load on sandy terrain up to a 12 degree gradient. The vehicle was to carry a driver, a crew of six, 20 to 30 rounds of ammunition and spare parts for the towed artillery gun.
In a 1928 survey of the various types of motorization by Oberslt. Gaissert of WaPrüf 6 III, there were three towing vehicles:

1. Dürkopp - Zugmaschine als Zwitter für l. und m. Artl. u. für Pionier
2. Maffei - Zugmaschine für l. und m. Artl. u. für Pionier als Räderraupen-Fahrzeug (wheeled and tracked vehicle)
3. Maffei - Raupe abgenommen und durch Rad ersetzt als 3 Achser m. 2 angetr. Achsen (vehicle with removable tracks - conversion to a 6x4 wheeled towing vehicle with two driven axles)

Dürkopp made a half-axle vehicle with front wheels that had solid rubber tyres. The tracked part of the chassis consisted of a front tension wheel, four pairs of small-diameter running wheels and a rear drive wheel. The belt was rubber.
In 1932, comparative tests of the three different chassis concepts were carried out, and the Dürkopp half-belt chassis was the best performer. It was the direct predecessor of the 8-ton medium tractor later referred to as the Sd.Kfz.7.
Due to Dürkopp's financial problems, the medium tractor development program was transferred to Krauss-Maffei AG in Munich.
