The vehicle represents another stage of development BVP M80. Serial production has been going on since 1984, differing from its predecessor mainly in the more powerful engine. The movement system of the vehicle consists on each side of five travel wheels and two support rollers, the tensioning wheel is located at the rear, the drive wheel at the front. The driver of the vehicle sits in the left front of the body, the commander sits behind him and the engine compartment is located on the right. The combat tower of the vehicle is mounted in the middle of the hull and is mounted in a 20mm cannon with a coupled machine gun 7.62mm. At the rear of the tower is installed a double OZ for PTŘS Sagger (9M14 Maljutka) controlled by wire with a range of max. 3000m. The swarm sits in the back of the hull, three soldiers sitting back to back. Each has a periscope and a loophole. Above them are two oval manholes with hatches. The vehicle is amphibious, movement in the water is guaranteed by belts, before entering the water, a breakwater is erected at the front of the body and the suction pumps are started. The vehicle can create its own smoke screen by injecting fuel into the exhaust pipe.

The vehicle, or rather its wreckage, is somewhere in a dump in Kosovo after the end of the NATO campaign and the forced departure of the Yugoslav army... It doesn't appear to have been visibly damaged, burned... perhaps left somewhere on the side of the road as a non-mobile... and then withdrawn to demonstrate the "precision of smart munitions" used in combat against ground targets...

According to the Military Balance 2021, Slovenia had 46 M-80A BMP - 14 of them in use and 32 in storage near the town of Pivka. On 15.06.2021, Slovenian Minister of Defence Marjan Šarec informed about the intention to provide 35 M-80As to Ukraine in exchange for a credit for the delivery of military equipment from the USA. Already on 21.06.2022, some agencies reported about the implementation of the rail transport by which the subject BMPs were shipped from Slovenia to Ukraine.
