In 1915/16 Ing. Hugo G. Bremer designed a new truck, the A.L.Z. 13, from which a modified truck was created, with the classic axles with wheels replaced by crawler chassis. This modification was originally called "Bremerwagen" after the designer. After the production of these vehicles was transferred to the Daimler company in Marienfeld (a municipality SW of Berlin, now a district of the city), the name of the vehicle was changed to Marienwagen I. In addition to test prototypes, an armoured version was built on the platform of this tracked vehicle. However, as the complicated and unreliable chassis did not prove very successful, a further modification was made. The front tracked chassis was replaced by a conventional axle with a conventional wheel. Even this modification, however, did not meet the chassis' ideas of reliability, and so in 1918 a new version Marienwagen II was created.
