In 1930, Maffei responded to a request from the German army to develop a new artillery tractor with increased throughput. It used the Reich Patent No. 481771 of 30.8.1929, held by Dipl. Ing. Kniepkamp (Heereswaffenamt - WaPruf 6).
It was a vehicle with conventional axles, between which were additional chassis accessories. This additional chassis could be lowered when driving off-road and a belt was put on it together with the rear wheel. In the prototype, this attachment consisted of one large tensioning wheel and one smaller running wheel. Later, the bogie was modified, the tension wheel was made smaller in diameter and the number of travelling wheels was also increased to a smaller diameter. Vehicles in this form were not mass-produced, the design was improved and a vehicle designated as MSZ 21 saw series production.
Source1) reports the production of five ZM 10 vehicles.
There was a proposal to use the ZM 10 platform to build a dummy combat vehicle (Kampfwagen Nachbildung auf Maffei ZM 10).

ZM 10 - Podľa konfigurácie podvozku by som skôr povedal, že ide o predĺženú platformu MSZ 21 s pôvodným veľkým napínacím kolesom a dvojicou malých pojazdových kolies. Možný medzistupeň medzi ZM 10 a MSZ 21 ? Sklon volantovej tyče a pozícia volantu svedčí v prospech platformy MSZ 21. Vozidlo má staršiu kapotáž motora s vertikálnymi vetracími štrbinami.
