Kurt Wilhelm Erdmann Gustav von der Chevallerie
enters service in the Imperial Army on 24.10.1910. On 18.8.1911 he is promoted to the rank of Leutnant in Grenadier-Regiment 5 and fights with this regiment throughout the First World War.


After the end of the war he transfers to the Reichswehr and becomes first a company commander and later a battalion commander within Infanterie-Regiment 4. On 1 August 1933 he is promoted to the rank of Oberstleutnant and on 1 July 1935 to the rank of Oberst. He subsequently becomes commander of Infanterie-Regiment 82 and immediately afterwards head of the 10th Department at the Army General Staff (Chef der 10. Abteilung im Generalstab des Heeres).


At the beginning of World War II, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 1 March 1939, to which he was promoted to Commander of the 83rd Airborne Division of the Generalmajor. Infanterie-Division. On 10.12.1940 he takes command of the 99th Leichte Division, during command of which he is promoted to the rank of Generalleutnant General on 1.1.1941. The division, which is part of the XXIX.Armee-Korps (6th Armee, Heeresgruppe Süd), participates under his command in the Russian campaign and is awarded the Knight's Cross (Ritterkreuz) on 23 October 1941 for its exploits in penetrating southern Ukraine.


In late December/December 1941, he is the Commanding General (Kommander General) of the LIX. Armeekorps (belonging to the 4.Panzer Armee, Heeresgruppe Süd), and on 1 February 1942 followed by promotion to the rank of General der Infanterie. For the successful defensive battles of his corps in the Kiev area in November/November 1943, he is awarded the oak twigs (Eichenlaub) to the Knight's Cross on 19 December 1943.


From 2 June 1944 to 5 September 1944, he commands the 1. Armee in France. After heavy retreat fighting by his army in the summer of 1944, he is transferred to the Führerreserve des OKH and discharged from active duty on 31.1.1945. On 18.4.1945 he was to be killed during a transfer near Kolberg and from that date he is also considered missing.
