On February 10, 2022, United Aircraft Corporation reported the first flight of a prototype of the new Beriev A-100 airborne reconnaissance, awareness and control aircraft with the on-board radio reconnaissance system complex turned on. The purpose of the flight was to verify the effect of the emitted radio frequency radiation on the on-board instruments and other special equipment on board. The aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft, the operability of the avionics and parts of the information processing system were checked and no deviations from the required condition were detected.
The A-100 aircraft is the successor to the A-50 complex (and its upgrades A-50M and A-50U), the development of which is being provided by the Beriev design kacnelaria. The original requirements for the project were approved in 2006 and the complex was to enter service in 2015, to be built on the same carrier as the A-50 complex. However, in 2013, changes were made to the assignment. Not only the carrier was changed (to Il-76MD-90A), but also the radar requirements, which caused the completion date to be postponed to 2017 (the radar development is being provided by the Vega concern). In 2014, the design bureau received the first Il-76MD-90A (v.no. 01-03, reg. no. 78651), named Ulyanovsk, on which it was to carry out the conversion. Apart from this aircraft, the design bureau also has a A-50 (fuselage number "Red 52", serial number 69-05), which after conversion serves as a flying laboratory (A-50LL) on which tests of individual components of the A-100 complex and their mutual influences are carried out. This laboratory completed its first flight on 26.10.2016 and already on 24.04.2017 it performed a flight with the on-board radar complex on. In the meantime, the incorporation of the radar pylon (and other components) into the prototype was carried out, which completed its first take-off on 18.11.2017. But the following more than a year the prototype was grounded and flight tests have been going on since 08.02.2019. Currently, the project has at least a 7-year delay and although the manufacturer declares that preliminary flight tests will be completed by 2022. The next joint state final trials are expected to be completed in 2024. A second prototype, announced for 2020, is also expected to participate in these trials, but there is no information yet on what condition this prototype is in.
