Even before World War I, a prototype of a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun designed to fight balloons was created at the request of the French army. The vehicle was designed by Charles Sainte-Claire-Deville, director of the Arsenal de Lyon. The construction of the prototype was entrusted to the firm De Dion-Bouton. The self-propelled gun was built on the chassis of a De Dion-Bouton FZ truck. Tests of the prototype began in 10/1910 in Châlons-en-Champagne. Development and testing stretched until 1914, when mass production began. A modified Canon de 75 mle 1897 field gun was mounted in the rear of the platform. During firing, the vehicle was stabilized by a quad of hydraulic supports. During production, the vehicles were continuously modified. The prototype used the original shorter platform without engine compartment armour and gunner protection. Later vehicles had the chassis lengthened, the engine compartment and gunner's compartment received armour. Production vehicles had twin wheels on the rear axle. The wheels were originally made of wood, but were later replaced by steel ones. The prototype had conventional air-filled tires, production vehicles received more durable solid ones. The self-propelled gun itself was accompanied by an ammunition truck which carried 160 rounds.
It was an extremely advanced fighting vehicle of its time, lasting in service until the occupation of France by German forces in 1940.
