Renault 18/20 HP type ED (model 1914)

In the records dated 8 October 1914 there is a mention of protective machine gun armoured vehicles, which were supposed to provide protection for cars armed with cannons (from makeshift conversions to more sophisticated ones, e.g. Renault EP, or Peugeot 18 HP 146). The platforms of the standard Renault ED civilian vehicles were to be used, on which armoured bodies were to be mounted, and they were to be fitted with machine guns. Production was to be handled by a company in Lyon. 100 vehicles were produced for the French army, with a further 40 vehicles delivered to Russia.
Due to the German introduction and use of S-Patrone armour-piercing ammunition, a small modified series of vehicles with better armour were based on these vehicles in 1915 to resist this ammunition.
