In 11/1944, Adolf Hitler was briefed on the development of new anti-aircraft tanks by means of supplied photographs of various designs. One of these was the Kugelblitz program on the Pz.Kpfw. IV. Due to the planned cancellation of production of this platform, the anti-aircraft turret lafted on the planned Jagdpanzer 38D platform should have been of interest. It was planned to use the platform as a carrier for various types of weapons, and one of them was to be an anti-aircraft tank, which was to carry the "Kugelblitz" turret. According to the source, a wooden mock-up of such a concept was made at Alkett. An interesting feature was the armament, which was to be complemented by another pair of 3 cm MK 103 anti-aircraft guns 2 cm Flak 38 anti-aircraft guns, in addition to the well-known 2 cm Flak 38 anti-aircraft guns. Production plans dated 30/1/1945 called for delivery of the first five Kugelblitz 38Ds in 7/1945, and the next 20 anti-aircraft tanks were to be delivered in 8/1945. Production was to be ramped up and by 12/1945 it was planned to deliver 100 anti-aircraft tanks per month. Of course, in the critical situation of German industry, this project was not even completed to prototype form. At a meeting with the Generalinspekteur der Panzertruppen on 14/03/1945, the limited production of 250 38D platforms was divided between tank fighters Jagdpanzer 38D (225 units) and tank scavengers Bergepanzer 38D (25 units).
