CHN - PL-11

PL-11

Work on this missile began in the late 1980s, when a contract was signed between the Italian firm Alenia and the Chinese government to provide assistance in the construction of the PLRS PL-11. Around 100 Aspide missiles (Italian modification AIM-7E Sparrow) were delivered from Italy to China. The first batch of Chinese Aspide missiles was assembled from Italian parts in 1989. But then the Italian government suspended the cooperation in protest against the Chinese government's violent suppression of demonstrations in Beijing. In the early 1990s, the PL-11 missile development program based on the HQ-61C missile with Aspide technology was resumed. Presumably a small number of these missiles were produced in the mid-1990s for testing and evaluation.
