As part of the utilization of damaged and decommissioned Pz.Kpfw.III tanks of various versions, it was decided to reconstruct their chassis into Bergepanzer III recovery and workshop vehicles. As it was a medium weight category chassis, it was envisaged to be used for light and medium-heavy equipment. Primarily, they were to serve in assault gun units StuG III/StuG IV. The first prototype was ready for trials at the Kummersdorf polygon on March 1, 1944. It is reported that between 3/1944 and 3/1945, 176 tanks were converted to Bergepanzer III form. Bergepanzer III platforms were also used for other conversions. The factory conversion was a reverse conversion to several flamethrower tanks. The modifications mentioned in the post below, or conversion to anti-aircraft vehicle, were made as field conversions.

In place of the tower, a wooden box superstructure was installed to store materials and workshop equipment. The machines had a lightweight collapsible hoist crane (2 ton capacity) and a special design of grappling hook was being trialled to ensure the vehicles could be extricated from difficult terrain. As far as I know, the machines did not have a classical winch, the release was to be carried out by means of a special hook construction, see. picture below.

Táto známa fotografia Bergepanzera III (Fgst.Nr.74104) s Bergeankerom (vyprošťovacia kotva) je z RH 8/1646. Záznam obsahuje niekoľko ďalších zaujímavých fotografií a detailov zo skúšok v Berke a Kummersdorfe s touto špeciálnou kotvou.
Celkovo sa v správe uvádza:
- že pokusy o vyprostenie pomocou kotvy boli vo všeobecnosti uspokojivé na priľnavých povrchoch, ale zlyhali v snehu, blatistej hline a piesku
- stredová spojka (obrázok 2) spájajúca kotvu s hlavnou ťažnou spojkou Bergepanzera III sa považovala za nepoužiteľnú a mali sa posúdiť vylepšené konštrukcie (obrázok 5)
- ťažné zariadenia mali tendenciu ohýbať sa v nerovnom teréne počas zákrut, alebo vo všeobecnosti ostrých zákrut (obrázky 3-4)
- oddelenie vo vnútri drevenej nadstavby sťažovalo uloženie kotvy, valčekový vozík kotvy sa kvôli tomu vôbec nedal zložiť
- bočné hriadele na podvozku Bergepanzer sa niekoľkokrát zlomili, čo sa pripisuje zhoršeniu kvality materiálu alebo výroby, pretože rovnaké poškodenie bolo pozorované pri iných skúškach podobných moderných modelov Pz.Kpfw. III, ale nie u starších

Interesting prestavba Bergepanzera on muničné and veliteľské vehicle (Blberg2.jpg). Uvítam more photos and informácií. Viem on's flax that sa is a fully uzavretú konštrukciu and lafetovaný has pravdepokobne 2 cm cannon. This machine was nájdený to treat of the roads and in the Poznan in the year 1945. It belonged to the state školnej units 500. Sturmgeschütz - Ersatz und Ausbildungs Abteilung (approx. location and určenie of the unit is questionable)..

Lafetation is really in the superstructure, but the superstructure plate practically covers the driver's visor so it limits the view and the superstructure would have to be on the tank without the upper armour plate, otherwise there would be no space. Nooo......it's a makeshift,but quite possible.The driver had a bit of a limited view,but it's not too bad.Worse with the cannon and the ammo boxes.Either there was an extremely thin driver or one with sturdy enough cervical vertebrae to be able to make a support for the ammo box. The ceiling of the hull is most likely gone.The superstructure is supposedly all-metal from the discussion on Nymburk,not wooden,as in the classic Bergepanzer III.The hatch should be from a Stug,somewhere in the middle of the superstructure. Identifying the version is not in my power.However, it is a low detail photo,but Pz.III(especially the first versions) is not my thing(it's out of my interest)...If there is the quasi-vinocular sight,it is of course unusable,but I rather have the impression that it was one of the last versions of the Pz.III,but without the additional armour.Hopefully I will get a better identification from those "future" documents.
