As part of the utilization of damaged and decommissioned Pz.Kpfw.III tanks of various versions, it was decided to reconstruct their chassis into Bergepanzer III recovery and workshop vehicles.
As it was a medium weight category chassis, it was envisaged to be used for light and medium-heavy equipment. Primarily, they were to serve in assault gun units StuG III/StuG IV. The first prototype was ready for trials at the Kummersdorf polygon on March 1, 1944. It is reported that between 3/1944 and 3/1945, 176 tanks were converted to Bergepanzer III form.
Bergepanzer III platforms were also used for other conversions. The factory conversion was a reverse conversion to several flamethrower tanks. The modifications mentioned in the post below, or conversion to anti-aircraft vehicle, were made as field conversions.

In place of the tower, a wooden box superstructure was installed to store materials and workshop equipment. The machines had a lightweight collapsible hoist crane (2 ton capacity) and a special design of grappling hook was being trialled to ensure the vehicles could be extricated from difficult terrain. As far as I know, the machines did not have a classical winch, the release was to be carried out by means of a special hook construction, see. picture below.

Bergepanzer III (vyprosťovacie vozidlo) - Táto známa fotografia Bergepanzera III (Fgst.Nr.74104) s Bergeankerom (vyprošťovacia kotva) je z RH 8/1646. Záznam obsahuje niekoľko ďalších zaujímavých fotografií a detailov zo skúšok v Berke a Kummersdorfe s touto špeciálnou kotvou.

Interesting prestavba Bergepanzera on muničné and veliteľské vehicle (Blberg2.jpg). Uvítam more photos and informácií.
Viem on's flax that sa is a fully uzavretú konštrukciu and lafetovaný has pravdepokobne 2 cm cannon.
This machine was nájdený to treat of the roads and in the Poznan in the year 1945. It belonged to the state školnej units 500. Sturmgeschütz - Ersatz und Ausbildungs Abteilung (approx. location and určenie of the unit is questionable)..

Diskuse

It's strange that the alleged cannon is sticking out of the driver's seat, the lafetaceans in this place are quite peculiar, it's not clear to me how they would have driven the machine.

It's really a bit strange...the lafetation above the driver's head.I've been wondering if it's some kind of imitation gun, but more likely not...or the barrel of a flamethrower...the dirt on the accessory protection from the belts under the barrel would argue in favor of this idea.

I'd be more inclined to think it's an abandoned wreck with some pipe or rod, the spot is more camouflage and the armour reinforcement is interesting

Oroooo...it's a pole to fly the white flag... Very Happy
There was a discussion on this topic on Nymburk...supposedly it was MG151/20...drawn from a Polish publication and some Romanian magazine, where there were more photos and a reconstruction of the likeness.

Or a broom handle Smile , but I really don't believe it would be anything like the MG 151/20, the mounting would look different and it would probably be in something other than the driver's window. Here it would only be if it was a non-moving machine used as a fixed object. By the way, did you notice that there is no machine gun in any of the photos?

Ten chýbajúci MG som si všimol až teraz...hmmmm...
Lafetácia je ale v nadstavbe,nie v korbe(priezore vodiča???)...

The machine gun is missing on all the machines in the photos. Lafetation is really in the superstructure, but the superstructure plate practically covers the driver's visor so it limits the view and the superstructure would have to be on the tank without the upper armour plate, otherwise there would be no space. The driver would be sitting so that the cannon's lafetta would probably be quite obstructive and depending on which side the ammo is fed from (it could be either side I guess depending on how the feeder is assembled) he would either be dropping empty hilns behind his neck or he would be constrained by the weapon's magazine (there was a belt box with the cannon) try to find a single barrel version of the MG151/20 and imagine how you would place it in that space. I don't really like the whole thing, in the photo one you know they are talking about a field modification (and mistakenly a jagdpanzer IV) I admit it looks more like (even in shape) a firing chamber for a normal infantry machine gun that only fired from the buttress and here where the damaged equipment is pushed back along the edges of the road someone put something in there. But it's still a rather curious vehicle.

Nooo......it's a makeshift, but quite possible. The driver had a bit of a limited view, but it's not too bad.Worse with the cannon and the ammo boxes.Either there was an extremely thin driver or one with sturdy enough cervical vertebrae to be able to make a support for the ammo box.
The ceiling of the hull is most likely gone. The superstructure is supposedly all-metal from the discussion on Nymburk, not wooden,as in the classic Bergepanzer III.The hatch should be from a Stug, somewhere in the middle of the superstructure.
I asked one of the discussants to provide me with some documentation,so,if he can send it to me,I will add it here...

Citace - bitaxe :

Všiml sis poklopu? Vypadá že není kulatý a že je upevněný úplně vepředu (tedy nad místem původního poklopu řidiče)

Pôvodný poklop vodiča ? U Pz.III ? Very Happy
URL : https://www.valka.cz/Bergepanzer-III-vyprostovacie-vozidlo-t29373#104807 Version : 0
You're right of course (I'm probably already fooling Smile ) the PzIII doesn't have a driver's license, but don't you think that the plate covers the two driver's slots that Pz IIIs (at least the older ones) have for the driver's view in combat ? In truth, it seems to me that the driver wouldn't be able to see much out of it even if it was one of the latest versions with the new visor. Can you tell what version it is? It's got ostkette, but that doesn't help us much Smileit was fitted in the west too.
URL : https://www.valka.cz/Bergepanzer-III-vyprostovacie-vozidlo-t29373#104811 Version : 0
It becomes... Very Happy

Identifying the version is not in my power. However, it is a low detail photo, but Pz.III(especially the first versions) is not my thing(it's out of my interest)...If there is the quasi-vinocular sight,it is of course unusable, but I rather have the impression that it was one of the last versions of the Pz.III,but without the additional armour.Hopefully I will get a better identification from those "future" documents.
URL : https://www.valka.cz/Bergepanzer-III-vyprostovacie-vozidlo-t29373#104813 Version : 0
I wouldn't put too much faith in the discussions on nymburk, only minimum people there know something about the matter, they rather look at it as a model and the reality is a bit off (for example, what is inside bothers them only if they want to open the hatch Smile , but if something appears I'm curious how it will be. The hatch from StuG doesn't look like much to me here either, it looks like it's a circle with something welded on the back, but what and why? Theoretically it may not be part of the car at all and it's something behind the machine Smile
URL : https://www.valka.cz/Bergepanzer-III-vyprostovacie-vozidlo-t29373#104886 Version : 0
Ad.hatch...it's a classic StuG shape...a hatch with a cutout, where there is a hinged hinged cover to slide out the binoculars.

yeah you're right, it's just harder to see the hatch, so do you think we can see the underside of the hatch in the photo of the berg? It looks like there's something else above the cutout, and it doesn't look like the house in the background, but it's very magnified so who knows.
URL : https://www.valka.cz/Bergepanzer-III-vyprostovacie-vozidlo-t29373#105111 Version : 0
Yes,it's the inside of the hatch. The "cooked in cutout" is the part of the building in the background.

As for the version, I would see it as ausf. J, because it was the first one to get the Kugelblende 50 gunnery cover and the next version L had additional pieces of armour on the front surfaces, which just covered the gunnery. I doubt if they would have taken it off.
