In 1939 a project of a kind of assault bench (bridge) for infantry on the chassis Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. C. The design resembled an extendable fireman's ladder and was intended to serve the needs of infantry when crossing small watercourses, traversing terrain elevations or soldiers could use it to reach the walls of a bunker.
The assault bench was the work of the Magirus company. The production of the prototypes was prolonged and according to the records, the pair of benches was supposed to be finished in 2/1940. Completion of the four machines was scheduled for 7/1941. The machine lived to see combat deployment. In 1941, the four completed machines found themselves within the 4. Zug 3. Kompanie/Panzer-Pionier-Batallion 39 on the eastern front. Combat records indicate a very positive assessment of the bench when crossing the river on 16 July 1941. Because the benches were mounted on old platforms Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. C, a pair of these vehicles were written off due to mechanical problems. The program was not further developed, although combat deployment was judged to be beneficial.
