Z hradeb ( kurtiny) vystupující objekt okrouhlého, polygonálního nebo jiného tvaru, jehož úkolem byla aktivní obrana přilehlých pevnostních staveb a kurtin. Výška objektu jen zřídka přesáhla okolní hradby. Bašty nacházíme u opevnění z dob starých Římanů stejně jako u pevností z doby Marie Terezie (baštou byl i bastion).
