NZLAV (New Zealand Light Armored Vehicle)

At the turn of the century, the New Zealand Army began to replace its age-old armored personnel carriers M113. An armored vehicle LAV III was chosen as their successor, which is used, among other things, under the name Stryker by the US Army. Based on the requirements of the New Zealand army, it was slightly modified and subsequently introduced into its armament under the designation NZLAV. A contract for the supply of a total of 105 vehicles was concluded between the Ministry of Defense and General Dynamics Land Systems - Canada in January 2001.

The production of the chassis and body of vehicles took place in Canada. On the contrary, the complete tower was manufactured in Australia, to be later transported to Canada, where it was completely assembled. The last NZLAV was delivered to the New Zealand Army in November 2004. The cost of one vehicle was approximately $ 6 million.

The first seven vehicles to New Zealand, at Trentham Military Camp, arrived in August 2003, where they were inspected. The second delivery of machines then took place on September 7. Earlier, in January 2003, a Transition Training Team (TTT) was set up in Waiour to retrain staff for the new technology. All vehicles were subsequently included in the 1st Battalion of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (1st Battalion RNZIR). The official acceptance of the cars between the Ministry of Defense and the manufacturer took place on October 24, 2003.

On the four-axle (the first two axles are steerable) chassis with all driven wheels, there is a body, in the left front part of which there is a driver's compartment. To the right is the engine-transmission compartment with a supercharged Caterpillar diesel engine with a maximum output of 260 kW and an Allison automatic transmission with six forward gears and one reverse gear. The tower with a full-circle measurement located in the middle of the car is equipped with an automatic cannon Bushmaster M242 caliber 25 mm. The cannon can use the following types of ammunition: HEI-T (High Explosive Incendiary-Traced), APFSDS-T (Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot-Traced) and Training Practice-Tracer (TP-T) or Training Practice Discarding Sabot-Tracer (TPDS-T) projectiles. A 7.62 mm MAG 58 machine gun is coupled to the vehicle's main weapon. Another of the same type is mounted in front of the car commander's hatch. The commander with the shooter in the tower have a thermal day/night sight.

The vehicle should be able to drive with all damaged tires up to a distance of 8 kilometers. NZLAV can be transported in transport machines C-130 Hercules.

Of the total 105 cars delivered, three are in the rescue and seven in the engineer's version. 73 machines are equipped with a winch with a pulling force of 80 kN.

In May 2009, two NZLAVs were deployed to support police during the shooting in the village of Napier. During the event, they protected the police officers by rescuing the body of the deceased police officer from the shooter's residence.

In November 2009, it was announced that three NZLAVs with additional armor would be deployed to support the operations of the New Zealand Special Forces NZSAS in Afghanistan. In 2011, the three LAVs were moved to Bámyan to support the activities of the provincial reconstruction team, as in Kabul were no longer needed due to the reduced number of NZSAS members. Another five NZLAV vehicles were also airlifted to Bámyán. One car was damaged during deployment by an improvised explosive bait placed on the road. In November 2013, all NZLAVs deployed in Afghanistan were finally transported back to New Zealand.

In 2011, after an earthquake at Christchurch, NZLAVs from the Burnham Camp were deployed to help police detain inside city during the nights.

In March 2016, two NZLAV aircraft assisted police in an incident near Kawerau after four police officers were shot there.
