The Russian steamer Ryazan was intercepted by the cruiser SMS Emden on 4 August 1914 and sent to Tsingtau. Here she was armed with the guns of the old gunboat Cormoran and renamed Cormoran. The cruiser was ordered to operate in the South Pacific. Here she met with no success and after using up her coal was interned on 13 December 1914 at Guam. Here she was sunk on 7 April 1917 by her own crew.
