XA-188


The XA-188 is a three-axle armored vehicle designed to carry personnel and other cargo on the battlefield and for patrolling. The vehicle, used only by the Dutch military, is based on the XA-180 series of wheeled transporters and has reinforced armour, a more powerful power unit and new interior equipment compared to its predecessors. The reinforced armour has forced an increase in weight, so the vehicle is not fully amphibious.


In the mid-1990s, the Dutch Ministry of Defence was looking for new armoured personnel carriers to be used primarily in peacekeeping operations abroad. In the end, the Finnish XA-188 won out, and a total of 90 examples were ordered, 70 of which were destined for the ground forces (Landmacht), with the rest going to the Marines (Korps Mariniers). The first three production vehicles rolled off the production line in the autumn of 1996. Most of the machines destined for the Landmacht ended up in the armament of the 11de Luchtmobiele Brigade.


All wheels of the transporter are permanently driven and equipped with a central compression system, the first two axles are steerable. The tyres are 14.00-20. In the front part of the welded hull sits the driver on the left and the commander on the right. Both have side doors as well as hatches with hatches on the top of the hull. Behind the commander's and driver's workstations on the left is the engine compartment equipped with a Valmet 612 DWI power unit and an Allison automatic transmission. The transporter is equipped with twin fuel tanks with a total capacity of 300 litres. On the roof of the hull behind the engine compartment is the vehicle's armament. This is a 7.62 mm MAG machine gun, which was replaced by the M2HB machine gun on some vehicles. The rear part of the vehicle is filled with a space for the airborne crew (the number of people varies from source to source, in total up to 11 people including the crew should be "crammed" into the XA-188), which has two benches located on the sides of the hull. Soldiers enter the transporter through the double doors at the rear of the hull.


The manufacturer declares that the vehicle can be used in both arctic and tropical conditions - in a temperature range of -46° to +49° C.


The vehicles have seen foreign deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq, among other places.
