Leutnant Fritz Rumey

Fritz Rumey was born on 3 March 1891 in Königsberg, East Prussia. He joined the army and when war broke out he served in the 45th Infantry Regiment, with which he fought in the Battle of Tanneberg. He was then transferred to the 3rd Grenadier Regiment, with which he fought on the Eastern Front until the summer of 1915, when, at his insistence, he was transferred to the Air Force.

He first served as an air observer, but graduated from fighter school and in May 1917 was transferred to Jasta 2, and a month later to Jasta 5. Rumey proved to be a very good pilot and on 26 June 1918 he scored his 25th kill, which was Sopwith Camel by Canadian ace Edward Eaton. On 10 July 1918 he was awarded the Pour le Merite. Then bad luck followed Rumey when he was wounded in combat on 25 August and 24 September. Three days later, on 27 September, Rumey's Fokker D.VII was badly damaged in a collision with an Allied S.E.5a piloted by South African ace George Lawson, Rumey bailed out of the aircraft but his parachute failed to open and Rumey was killed. In total, he scored 45 kills.
