Poterna
The exit gate leading into the fortress moat.
The poterna used to be the outlet of a wide passage (under the fortress rampart) leading from the ramparts to the outer armour. The width of the poterna reached a maximum of 2 metres compared to the approximately 3 metre width of the passage (in the Vauban fortifications). The gate was usually placed above the level of the trench bottom. In times of peace it could be walled up.
The passage with the gate as a whole is also referred to as a poterna.
