I on a 5-ton artillery tractor chassis Sd.Kfz. 6 was converted into a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. The most mass-produced version used was the BN 9. A 3.7 cm Flak 36 was fielded. The latter was placed on a platform behind the driver's compartment. The gun was fully rotatable. Some of the machines had the cannon protected by an armoured shield, some did not, some crews removed it themselves. The crew consisted of 7 men (driver, commander and 5 men manning the gun). The crew had a portable artillery rangefinder. The vehicle carried only a contingency supply of ammunition. The ammunition was carried by escort vehicles or by the self-propelled anti-aircraft gun itself in a special ammunition trailer Sonderanhänger 57 (Sd.Ah.57).
The contract for the production of the superstructures was awarded to Gottfried Lindner AG of Ammendorf. The first order was for 63 pieces of superstructures was produced in 7/1939. In the same month 25 vehicles were completed, the completion of the remaining 38 vehicles was not completed until 8/1939 due to insufficient supply of platforms supplied by Büssing NAG. The next order was for 135 machines, but Büssing NAG stated in its monthly production reports that 140 vehicles were delivered for these anti-submarine guns. The chassis were made between 1/1940 - 11/1941. During production, the torsion bars were required to be modified, their thickness was increased. A total of 198 machines were produced. The first series of 63 cars had mesh sidebars made of hexagonal mesh, the second series had sidebars made of square mesh mesh.

Most of the vehicles were supplied to Luftwaffe anti-aircraft units. Each anti-aircraft battery was to have 9 pieces of this machine in condition. Their number was increased to 12 pieces in a battery from 1.10.1943. The only land army unit that had in its armament Sd.Kfz. 6/2 was Infantry Regiment "Großdeutchland", which at the beginning of 1942 had two batteries of 9 of this anti-aircraft machine.
