Poslanci Národního shromáždění 1946 - 1948

I would like to gradually place lists of all Czech and Slovak legislators between 1918 and 1948 in the Overview section. However, despite my best efforts, I could not find any or only sketchy biographical information on some of them. I will mark these persons strongly and in italics and will be glad for any additional information.

26.5.1946

After eleven years, Czechoslovakia held parliamentary elections, which, however, could not be described as completely free: some citizens were denied the right to vote by retributive decrees (about 250-300 thousand voters) and the number of parties was limited by administrative decision to four in the Czech lands and four in Slovakia. The principles of proportional representation and linked candidates were retained, but the second chamber of parliament was not restored and the age limit for active and passive suffrage was lowered from 21 to 18 and from 30 to 21. Turnout in the elections was high. The results reflected the experience and lessons of the pre-Monarch Republic and the occupation. The Communists won overwhelmingly. The Communist Party achieved the best electoral result ever achieved by the Communists in a democratic election in Europe - 40.17% of the vote and 93 seats. The Communist pre-election propaganda, directed by the Nazi expert Paul Steinmüller, whom the party had borrowed from prison, did not quote a single debased Communist slogan; on the contrary, it talked about democracy. It said what the people wanted to hear - it attacked the Germans most of all. It also succeeded in deceiving the countryside and former agrarians, to whom it promised land allocations, which is why most former agrarians voted for the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. The Czechoslovak National Socialist Party won 23.66% of the vote and 55 seats, the Czechoslovak People's Party 20.23% of the vote and 46 seats, and the Czechoslovak Social Democracy 15.59% of the vote and 37 seats. In Slovakia, the Democratic Party won by a landslide (61.43% of the vote and 43 seats), ahead of the Communist Party (30.47% of the vote and 21 seats), the Freedom Party (3.73% and 3 seats) and the Labour Party (3.11% and 2 seats). The results of the parliamentary elections did not meet the expectations of the National Socialists in particular, who, although they came second in the elections, lost almost one million votes to the Communist Party. They were particularly disappointed by the results of the elections in Prague, which the National Socialists considered to be their domain. Even their plan to admit former agrarians into the party did not meet with much success. The other Czech parties also experienced a retreat from their leading positions. In the People's Party, the election results provoked a near revolt. It was instigated by MP Helena Koželuhová, who demanded a change in Šrámek's leadership and an active, sharply critical policy towards the Communists. Her subsequent expulsion from the People's Party caused considerable discontent in the party and even threatened to split it. The Social Democracy was also visibly shaken by the election results, with a wave of criticism directed against the existing policy of the leadership and the party chairman, Zdeněk Fierlinger. The critics saw the main cause of the defeat in the cooperation with the Communists and expressed a categorical demand to clearly separate from the Communists. The elections brought a high electoral victory to the Communists, mainly due to their demagogic agricultural policy. However, their electoral victory was marred by the success of the Slovak Democrats. The success of the Democratic Party led the Communists from considering expelling the party from the National Front to subsequent attempts to break it up. The following deputies were elected for each party:
