Wiesel 1 TOW

The development of the Wiesel 1 light armoured tracked vehicle was a response to the need of German airborne troops to have in their armament a light , air transportable vehicle with decent off-road handling characteristics but also with some armoured protection. They were also expected to be able to carry anti-tank armament and, as development has shown, not only that. The initial ideas of the Bundeswehr were formulated in 1969 . Among the essential ones were the dimensional limitation due to the helicopter transport CH-53G , also the possibility of dropping the vehicle on a parachute and the action radius of the vehicle. FAUN was the first to respond with its Kraka (Kraft-karren) vehicle on wheeled chassis. Other companies, including Porsche, preferred the tracked chassis, but the vehicle selection programme was cancelled in 1978 due to the insufficient number of FAUN Kraka vehicles, of which 862 were produced for the German army between 1974 and 1975. Porsche continued to develop the vehicle at its own expense, and in 1984 the program was resumed and the company unveiled its modernized prototype. In 1987, the Bundeswehr ordered a total of 343 vehicles in the TOW version, 210 units, and 133 units in the Rheinmetall Rh 202 20mm gun version. After 5 years of trials, series production of the vehicle, which was named Wiesel (weasel), began at Krupp MaK, part of Rheinmetall Landsysteme. A wide variety of special purpose versions of these vehicles were created (mortar, ambulance, air defense) but only a few were introduced into the armament of armies.
The vehicle is characterised by its small length of 3.3 to 3.5 m (depending on the version) but also by unmistakable features such as the considerable slope of the hull front and its sinuous side surfaces. The hull is welded with armoured plates which can withstand projectiles up to 7,62 mm calibre and grenade splinters. The front of the vehicle contains a gearbox followed by the engine compartment on the right side of the vehicle and the driver's compartment next to it. The remaining part of the hull is reserved for the fighting compartment , which provides space for one or two crew members (depending on the version). The tracked chassis is composed of a drive wheel , which is at the front, followed by three running wheels above which is a single return pulley. The tracks are made up of two moulded rubber strips reinforced with steel cables and cross members. Propulsion is provided by a turbocharged 2.0 litre (2.0 cu in) TDI five-cylinder diesel engine with a power output of 64 kW (86 hp), which can give the vehicle a top speed of 70 km/h (70 mph) in 24 s. The vehicle is a three-seater and PTRK TOW is mounted at the rear of the hull with a 45 degree offset to either side and a firing diameter of 7 TOW missiles in the shipping containers.

Wiesel TOW vehicles of the German KFOR contingent.
In order to prevent the vehicle crews from getting "dumbed down" by the routine of daily patrols in settlements and towns, they were occasionally given the chance to drive in open terrain. These "Easy Ride Tours" maintained the drivers' ability to exploit the vehicles' excellent handling characteristics "to the limit of technical capability"...
