The D-470 snow blower was designed by the Ryabinsk Road Car Plant on a ZIL-157 chassis. Series production began in 1958. In 1959, production was transferred to the Severodvinsk Mechanical Equipment Repair Plant (since 1962 - "Sevdormash"). In 1966 the thousandth machine was produced.
The D-470 is designed to remove snow from roads, airport runways and as well as aircraft parking areas. The cutter can throw snow up to 25 m. The disadvantage, especially for winter maintenance of airport surfaces, is that the cutter cannot remove snow up to the concrete, due to the abrasion of the cutter's blade spiral as well as the concrete or asphalt itself.

Snow blower D-470 is designed to remove snow from all types of roads, airports and other areas where there are suitable conditions for its work. Its use is advantageous mainly in the removal of snow drifts and snow rolls, created during the removal of snow by other means (snow plows, bulldozers, motor graders, etc.). Compared to these means, the cutter has the advantage of throwing snow from the point of engagement over a greater distance.

The working equipment is mounted on a modified vehicle chassis ZIL-157.
