377. Squadriglia Autonoma

Formed as Sezione Sperimentale within the 23rd Gruppo in Comiso, Aeroporto di Comiso "Vincenzo Magliocco" / In August 1941, the unit was armed with the first Re.2000 first series to test them in frontline conditions. The Reggiane fighters, originally intended for the catapults of Regia Marina ships, were assigned to 377 due to the lack of modern machines in Regia Aeronautica. Squadriglia Autonoma.
The unit was heavily involved in operations against Malta, operating from bases in Sicily and Sardinia. After the 23rd Gruppo was transferred to Libya in December 1941 the Squadriglia became independent and remained in Sicily. During 1942 it was rearmed as III. Series Re.2000, it remained stationed in Sicily until the spring of 1943. In the meantime she received several CR.42NCs for night fighter duties, on which Tenente Torchio achieved five night kills.
By the end of 1942, when it was obvious that the Reggiane fighters were becoming obsolete, 377. Squadrigli delivered a dozen MC.200s. and finally in February 1943 three MC.202s were delivered on which three kills of four-engined bombers were achieved in April. In May 1943 the unit was disbanded and its pilots and machines transferred to 53. Storm.
