Trans-Florida Executive Mustang/Trans-Florida Cavalier, Cavalier Mustang II

The elimination of the Mustangs from the USAF and ANG in 1957 released hundreds of P-51s to the civilian market. In the same year, newspaper publisher David B. Lindsay Jr. founded the company Trans-Florida Aviation, with which he wanted to rebuild these surplus military P-51 on civilian commercial aircraft. Because of this, he also bought the rights to design the Mustang from North American.
He initially called his plane Trans-Florida Executive Mustang, but soon renamed it Trans-Florida Aviation Cavalier. In 1967, the company was renamed Cavalier Aircraft Corporation. The first of the Executive Mustangs was built in 1958. Military equipment and gear were removed from the airframe, a second seat was installed, a new Rolls-Royce Merlin V-1650-7 engine with some parts from the Merlin 620, new avionics, a luxurious soundproof leather interior, a luggage compartment instead of weapons and was provided with civilian paint. A total of five models were available, where the numbers in the name meant their range in nautical miles:

Cavalier 750, year 1959: only basic 1522 l tank.
Cavalier 1200, 1960: an additional 170 l tank in the wings.
Cavalier 1500, 1960: an additional 238.5 l tank in the wings.
Cavalier 2000, 1967: two more 416.5 l tanks at the ends of the wing.
Cavalier 2500, 196 ?: plus two 238.5 l tanks in the wings and two 416.5 l tanks in the ends of the wing.

Some versions had a 14-inch higher rudder taken from P-51H. The aircraft could be further modified at the customer's request. During the 1960s, about 20 machines were rebuilt.

In 1967 Cavalier developed a modernized Mustang for Close Support and Counter-Insurgency Combat (COIN), Cavalier Mustang II. It was rebuilt P-51D with a new Rolls Royce Merlin 620 engine , improved avionics, higher rudder from P-51H, fixed fuel tanks at the ends of the wings according to civilian versions 2000 and 2500 and reinforced wing, which could carry six half-inch machine guns and eight suspensions for two 1000 lb bombs and six five-inch missiles with a total weight of up to 1.8 tons. Mustangs II also had a second seat behind the pilot, for observers, but the cockpit cover was the original "single". Some photographs show a bulge in the back of the cab, providing more space for the rear seated person, but it is not known if this was the standard form. The customer of these Mustangs was the USAF, which supplied them with its allies in South America and Asia under the Military Assistance Program (MAP). Deliveries took place in two waves, the first in 1967, the second in 1972. Although these new Mustangs were designed for South American and Asian countries, they were delivered with the full designation and new USAF serial numbers. One two-seater Cavalier TF-51D (67-14866) with a double control, an enlarged cockpit and only four machine guns in the wing, originally a company demonstrator with a civil registration N851D, was also delivered to Indonesia. The other two TF-51D went to Bolivia.

In 1968, the US military used the old P-51D (44-72990) as a target aircraft for the helicopter project Lockheed YAH-56 Cheyenne. This aircraft was so successful that the military ordered for testing in Fort Rucher for these tasks two Mustangs II from Cavalier, which received serial numbers 68-15795 and 68-15796. These aircraft had fuel tanks at the ends of the wing and were unarmed. After the end of the Cheyenne program, these aircraft were used for other projects, 68-15795, for example, on NAS China Lake was equipped with two 106mm recoilless cannons at the ends of the wings, tested against fortified ground targets.

Four Cavalier Mustang II had at the beginning of the "football war" with Honduras FAS (Fuerza Aérea Salvadorena, Salvadoran Air Force), which gave them the designations 401, 403, 404 and 405. FAS-403 - 405 certainly flew in color according to the USAF SEA scheme, still applied at the Cavalier factory in Sarasota. The Salvadoran Cavalier Mustangs originally carried tanks at the outer end of the wing, but these were removed when pilots criticized their negative impact on maneuverability. FAS Commander Archie Baldocchi, the owner of one of the "ordinary" Mustangs used by the FAS, designed the new rounded wing ends, providing better control and stability. The installed radios were also unsatisfactory, and Baldocchi therefore replaced them with army radios, taken from several command jeeps. He also added reflective sights to the aircraft, and the enterprising Baldocchi later designed a new laminate auxiliary tank. On July 15, 1969, a civilian unarmed Cavalier Mustang 750 was also delivered, which was given the designation FAS-406, but logically did not participate in the fighting. He was to pay the FAS-404 for the fight, which was to be shot down by the Honduran Corsair F4U-5. The others were discarded in about 1975. For more see source 1.

Other Mustangs II were delivered to Bolivia (about nine, I know five: 67-14863 and 67-22579 - 67-22582, the last is one of two TF-51. They remained in service until 1978. See photo) and six to Indonesia (72-1536 - 72-1541, known designations are F-351, F-362, F-363, F-367 and one TF-51, pp. 67-14866, designated F-361. governments did not have Indonesian Mustangs II fuel tanks at the ends of the wings), the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and possibly elsewhere.

Cavalier modified its Mustangs in various ways according to the order, it is not clear their exact designation (there are Cavalier Mustang, Mustang Cavalier or just Cavalier and even Mustang Rider. I assume that the correct designation after 1967 was, for example, Cavalier Aviation Cavalier 2000), similar it is not certain whether the military versions were referred to as the Mustang II, but for convenience, all military conversions of the Cavalier Mustang are usually referred to as such. Many of the civilian conversions, as well as many export military ones, were later rebuilt into classic P-51s, so today mainly Mustangs II are very rare.

The last project of the Cavalier company before its demise in 1971 was Turbo Mustang III, an unsuccessful prototype of a Mustang with a Rolls-turboprop engine. Royce Dart, later developed by Piper in the type Enforcer.
