BRA - FOG-MPM

In Brazil, since the late 1980s, AVIBRAS has been developing a multi-purpose missile, guided to the target by an optical fibre (microcable). The missile is designated FOG - MPM (Fibre Optics Guided-Multi Purpose Missile) and is designed for use against a variety of targets such as tanks, BVP and helicopters flying at low altitudes. The missile has a length of 1500 mm, calibre 180 mm. It is propelled by a solid-fuel rocket motor located in the central part of the hull. Two angled nozzles are located on the sides and behind them, there is a coil with an optical microcable. The missile is equipped with a quadruplet of stabilizers mounted in the rear and a quadruplet of control plates, in the front of the missile. The plates are simple in shape and are rotated relative to each other. The stabilisers and control plates are hinged to accommodate the missile in the launching container.
In the front part of the missile there is a television camera, the digitised signal of which is transmitted via a fibre-optic cable to the position of the gunner - the guidance operator. Guidance via fibre optic cable ensures smooth control of the missile, immunity to fog and smoke. The system is resistant to electronic interference. The range of the missile is about 20 km. The development of the missile is almost complete, 15 missiles have been fired in trials and some of them had a live payload.
The complete FOG-MPM weapon consists of: a launcher, a missile with a warhead - according to the intention of destruction (the missile is placed in a transport-launching container), a gunner's workstation - a guidance operator's workstation.
The system is to be mounted on a light off-road vehicle, where eight missile containers could be placed. When firing, the launcher is raised to a vertical position. The missile takes off perpendicularly, ascends to an altitude of 150 m, where a gunner - the guidance operator - takes control and guides the missile into a descending flight.
The speed of the missile is subsonic and the target is attacked from above. The cumulative warhead has a tandem composition with a penetration of 1000 mm of homogeneous armour.
