Short Stirling B Mk.I MG-V (N6003) belonging to 7 Squadron RAF (No. 7 Squadron RAF).

Delivered to 7 Squadron by Austin Motors Ltd. on 29 September 1941. The cause was flak damage. It was repaired and returned to base.

On 15 November 1941 it crashed shortly after take-off from Oakington for a mission to Kiel.

The Oakington Airfield Commander G/C Adams was involved in rescuing the airmen from the burning machine. He was nearby in his car and witnessed the accident. He immediately arrived at the accident and assisted the crew members out of the burning and exploding machine to safety. He eventually pulled the pilot, Cpt. Hunter and the body of Sgt. Bennett. For this action, he received an OBE.

The accident injured Cpt. I. H. Hunter (a member of the RNZAF) died of his injuries shortly after the accident, Sgt. A. C. Bennett (a member of the RAAF) died, Sgt. Heliwell, Sgt. D. Topping, Sgt. A. J. Hansel, Sgt. T. Benham and Sgt. Hudson sustained injuries in the accident.

Hunter had not long before, on 30 October 1941, survived an accident involving a Short Stirling MG-H (N6085) when he was flying as co-pilot.

* Correction (Admin): based on information from Mr Nick Tarr (below), grandson of Fredrick Bertram Pearson, who was awarded the British Empire Medal for rescuing two airmen from the crashed machine, the serial number of the plane that crashed on 15.11.1941 should have been W7445 and not N6003. Verified via RAF Bomber Command Losses 1941 book.

Hello, great website resource that you have, thank you. I am researching my Grandfather being awarded the Bristish Empire Medal (BEM) for rescuing two of the crew of Short Stirling MG-V W7445 that crashed upon take off from RAF Oakington, just missing my Grand Fathers farm house and crashing into an Orchard close by. He rescued two of the crew one of whim is Sgt A J Ansel and I have copies of letter from both Sgt Ansel and his partents to my Grand Father Fredrick Bertram Pearson. The Serial number N6003 is from another Short Stirling that crashed into two cottages and it was that crash that involved Group Captain Adams, not W7445 MG-V as this is the plane that my Grandfather rescued two crew from. Please can you amedn the link enter below to remove reference to Group Captain Adams and change the Serial Number Reference to W7445 from N6003 (incorrect). I'd greatly appreciate this as accuarcy is all important as thes records become older. I have also have some documents that may be of interest and attach these for your reference: Crash Site of Stirling MG-V W7445, My Grandfathers Medals and Citation and the Operational Book Record, see entry dated 15th November. Many Thanks, Nick Tarr email nick.tarr21031965@gmail.com
