Fairey Campania

The Fairey Campania was a two-seat naval aircraft, named after the aircraft carrier Campania. The latter was originally a conversion from a liner to carry seaplanes, but was too vulnerable in this form. She was therefore fitted with a take-off deck in mid-1916, which allowed her machines to be deployed much more quickly. For this purpose, a two-seat patrol and reconnaissance aircraft was designed to take off from the deck and land on the surface - incidentally the first aircraft designed specifically for aircraft carriers. The Fairey company therefore created its Campania, and the first prototype, with the company designation F.16, flew in February 1917. This machine used a 184 kW Rolls-Royce Eagle IV engine, while the second prototype, the F.17, had a 205 kW Eagle V engine. This second version was introduced into series production, later supplemented by an F.22 variant with a Sunbeam Maori II engine of 185 kW. The Campanias were used on the aircraft carrier Campania, after which they were named, and on the seaplane carriers Nairana and Pegasus, as well as from shore bases (prototypes ended up at Scapa Flow). Production was ordered from four companies, Fairey (50 machines in two series), Barclay Curie and Company (50) and Frederick Sage and Company/Sunbeam Motor Car Company (70), but only 62 were actually built (half of which were with Sunbeams), the rest of the order being cancelled after the Armistice. Campaniles from the seaplane carrier Nairana were also deployed in the Arkhangelsk intervention. The last were scrapped in the summer of 1919.

In 1917, a scaled-down and simplified equivalent of the Fairey Campania, the F.127, was also built for catapult tests.
