Aiglon Roulier

The aircraft was designed in 1916 by Jean Roulier. He served as a flying boat pilot in the French Navy. Unfortunately, he was shot down and killed over Trieste on 15 August 1916.

The French company Aiglon, based in Thonon-les-Bains, offered Roulier's design to the Navy in the same year, and in December 1916 the Naval Aviation (Aviation Maritime) ordered one prototype. It first flew in January 1917 at Amphion(near Lake Léman), but crashed and was destroyed. A second prototype was built, which first flew on 27 May 1917, piloted by EV1 pilot Georges Guierre. After this successful first flight, the machine was taken to the Frejus Saint-Raphael base for further tests (CEPA - Centre d'expérimentations pratiques de l'Aéronautique navale). Here, the machine completed 4 more sorties, but subsequently disappeared from the register of aircraft used by the Navy.

Construction:
It was a fighter aircraft of the flying boat type. The machine had a shell fuselage with a single-seat pilot compartment in the nose in front of the wings, which provided the pilot with excellent visibility. The tail surfaces were simple, reinforced with stiffening wires. The pilot had a fixed Vickers 7.7 mm calibre rifle mounted in front of his cockpit. The 9B's Clerget rotary engine propulsion in a pusher configuration necessitated a rather complex system of struts above the fuselage, and - given the diameter of the propeller - these struts had to be made relatively very long. Therefore, the upper wing was quite high.
The reasons why there was no further development of the design, nor the inclusion of the aircraft and any unit, are unknown.

Remark:
In the sources there is some variation in the designation of the machine either as Aiglon-Roulier or Roulier-Aiglon
