Další popis viz historie

The P-40Q was an experimental project which attempted to produce a really modern fighter out of the existing P-40. The modifications were in fact so drastic that there was very little in common with earlier P-40 versions.
Two P-40Ks (serial numbers 42-9987 and 42-45722) and one P-40N (serial number 43-24571) were extensively modified with revised cooling systems, two-stage superchargers, and structural changes which markedly altered their appearance. The project was assigned the designation XP-40Q.
The XP-40Q was built three times. In its final form, with a shallow chin air scoop, clipped wings and a bubble canopy, the Curtiss fighter's appearance was somewhat reminiscent of a P-51D Mustang. The XP-40Q, as the new version was redesignated, was the fastest of the Warhawks. Unfortunately, by the time the XP-40Q was built, the more capable P-51D was already available in large numbers. Only three were built, and only one was evaluated and rejected by the USAAF.

History:
Experimental version, designated the XP-40Q was built in three copies, factory Curtiss-Wright it was during the construction of this version in an attempt to Warhawk reached similar performance as the North American P-51D Mustang. All three prototypes are incurred by the redevelopment of older aircraft, but the adjustments made were so fundamental that the resulting aircraft are nepodobaly his predecessors.

The first prototype XP-40Q-1 originated adaptation of the serial of the airplane P-40K-10CU (Sn. 42-9987). New engine Allison V-1710-121 achieve the performance of 1 047 kW mainly due to a two-stage compressor and the injection of water and methanol. The engine powered a four-blade propeller, which highlighted the new look of the plane. A very noticeable feature was the absence of a large radiator under the engine, the coolers were placed in the wing roots and under the fuselage was flat, too nevystupující cooler. The wings have been deprived of the bomb pylons. The cabin was the same as the older Warhawků.

The second prototype XP-40Q-2 was rebuilt from the P-40K-1CU (Sn. 42-45722). The most noticeable difference was the installation of guttate cabin, the cooling system was at first identical with the previous machine, but very soon was modified – a flat radiator was moved under the engine, but was smaller than what should older version. In the roots of the wings was another radiator fluid, and oil. The wing was "zaříznuto" and thus to reduce the margin.

The third aircraft, the P-40Q-3 was almost identical with the second prototype and was rebuilt from the P-40N-25CU, the difference was only in the flat windscreen, which was armoured.

All the planes have been very powerful, but in the arsenal of the USAAF didn't make, were rejected, because they still did not reach the performances of Mustang, Lightning or Thunderboltu.

Diskuse

Yeah, there's something to it. A cross between a P-40 and Mustang. Nice plane..
