Lockheed XP-58 Chain Lightning

History:
It is an exaggeration to say that Lockheed Aircraft Corporation was duly punished for that it received approval from the Ministry of War to export fighter P-38 to Europe, which was certainly a very lucrative contract. However, Lockheed undertook to develop a fighter of a similar concept for the US Army at its own expense, but with much higher performance. Such an agreement was concluded by both parties in the spring of 1940.

The first version was to be powered by turbocharged engines Continental IV-1430, those at low weight were to provide 1,500 - 1,600 horsepower. Two forms were designed - one-seater and two-seater design. The USAAC expressed interest in a two-seater version, where the shooter could remotely control two 12.7 mm machine guns, which were located at the ends of the beams of the tail surfaces.

The development of the engines dragged on and so the power units changed, the Pratt & amp; Whitney XH-2600-9/11, this engine was far from complete development, and before the drawing part of the new project began, the development of the engine was stopped and canceled. The defense armament changed, ie its location, it was to be placed in a remote-controlled turret at the rear under the fuselage.

After the cancellation of the Pratt & amp; Whitney XH-2600-9/11 opted for another untested new engine, this time the Wright XR-2160 Tornado, which was expected to produce around 2,350 horsepower and also required pressurized space for the crew, while announcing that the prototype was expected in August 1942, which was a completely unrealistic deadline.

The beginning of 1942 marked the beginning of suffering for Lockheed and its XP-58 project. fighter aircraft and a little later again a bomber, the bomber version was to have a three-member crew, there was already a bomber. Furthermore, the construction of the second prototype was required, which in turn would have the character of a fighter, ie again extremely heavily armed fighters (4x 37 mm cannon or 1x 75 mm cannon and two 12.7 mm machine guns).

Lockheed eventually found a solution that consisted of a quickly exchangeable bow, so the aircraft could be armed with a large cannon or 37 mm cannons. However, the Wright motor factory in the meantime withdrew from the development of the Tornado engine and so the XP-58 was eventually powered by engines Allison V -3420-11/13 with an output of 2,600 - 3,000 horsepower. The prototype took off on June 6, 1944, according to some sources flew about 16 hours in 25 takeoffs and then was permanently grounded, according to other sources, his first flight and last flight, flew to Wright Field and served as an aid in training mechanics. The USAAF no longer knew what to do with such an aircraft.
