Messerschmitt Bf 109 C-1

History:
Once the Junkers factory was able to supply new versions of engines Jumo 210 G, which were equipped with direct fuel injection, production of a new version of the Bf 109 C was launched at Bayerische Flugzeugwerke.
In addition to the direct fuel injection engine, the new version brought further improvements and modifications. Modifications were made to the exhaust pipe, which was extended to remove the exhaust gases outside the cooling system, this modification improved the cooling of the engine. Another visible change was the new propeller cone, on the other hand, the increase in the volume of the fuel tank was not visible, but it extended the range of the aircraft. The effort to strengthen the armament in the version of the Bf 109 C-1 manifested itself in the installation of two more machine guns MG 17 to the wings, for each of these machine guns was carried a supply of 420 rounds.
Let's get back to the engine unit, direct fuel injection allowed a faster supply of fuel, so the engine did not have a "hole" after a sharp addition of gas, or during maneuvers where a negative overload was achieved. The engine, where the fuel mixture was prepared in carburetors, flooded and sometimes went out in these modes. Another well-solved element was the automatically adjustable propeller, which meant that the angle of attack of the propeller was automatically adjusted according to the flight mode and the position of the throttle lever, the propeller thus achieved high efficiency. The pilot had the opportunity to change the angle of approach manually, this was necessary, for example, during a long descending flight, to avoid overflow engine. Soviet pilots lacked such an automatic device throughout the war.
The version of the Bf 109 C-1 was produced in a small series (Junkers failed to deliver engines), whereas another version of the Bf 109 C-2 with a fifth machine gun in the propeller axis was produced in only a few pieces, it was found that the machine gun placed between the engine cylinders damages the recoil of the engine bed, so a prototype Bf 109 C-3 was created, in which the increase in firepower was solved by replacing the wing machine guns with cannons MG FF, result - recoil of the cannon deformed the wing beams and wing cover. The last attempt was to install a cannon between the engine cylinders in the Bf 109 C-4 version, it was the most heavily armed "C" carrier carrying the cannon and four machine guns MG 17. Also, this version did not exceed the stage of testing, the designers found that without major modifications to the engine bed can not be installed between the engine cylinders another weapon.

According to one source, W. Nr 1722 was a yellow "11" cannon version of the Bf 109 C-3. In August 1939 he was in the state of 3./ZG 2 and on September 1, 1939 he had to land on his belly after the unit's first combat take-off "at the airport in Juliusburg Ofw. Kurt Miller with a machine damage rate of 60%. According to the second version, it was to crash in the fog around 6.00 am Lt. Hans Nieswandt. In any case, this machine was replaced by W.Nr 1735. Whether it was a version of the C-1, C-2, or C-3 - it is not known. However, there is one picture of the yellow "11", which proves that it was a version armed with cannons in the wings.
