the Armor of the coastal defense of Novgorod and Vice-admiral Popov
A brief history
After the experience of the Russians with the british cannon prámy, used for the crimean war, was established in the year 1863 in the department of the navy the idea to produce well-armored floating artillery battery, capable of deployment in the coastal waters of the Azov and the Black sea and on the rivers of this area. Of all of the types, was accepted by the project kontraadmirála Popova, who designed the ship of unconventional design, allowing for a small place to place the big guns and strong armor, while maintaining a small dive. Were conducted to test the zmenšenými models.
Production of the first piece was launched by the st. petersburg shipyard. Parts of the boat were carried into the Nikolaevna and here, in the years 1872-1873 was compiled "Novgorod". Per year in this shipyard completed his younger and larger brother "of Kiev", which was after a time was renamed "Vice-admiral Popov". Both ships have been marked by the tacit operation of the steam machines and were placed in service as a floating battery of defence of the coast. Between the black sea sailors for the circular ironclad ships took charge of the naming of the "Popovky".
In 1892, the ships of the Novgorod and Viceadmiral Popov, reclassified as to the class obrněnců coastal defense.
Their navigational skills were problematic and therefore remained in the service about ten years. Sailing on a stormy sea was almost impossible, the ships ill keep direction even in the quiet surface of the water. Because of the ship during the voyage kymácely used to be shooting very inaccurate. Operationally have been deployed in the years 1877-1878, on the lower reaches of the Danube at events in the west of the Danube fleet against the Turks.

A cannon shot over the edge of the superstructure. A small cannon to defend was placed in a covered enemy firing positions on the sides of the fuselage. Propulsion provide a combined steam machines british firm Arthur Woolfa and adjustable propellers of Robert Griffitha. Even though they were made of only two vessels of this type, each piece different - different dimensions and armament.
