Sopwith Gun Bus

description

Originally, the Sopwith Gun Bus was designed before the war (1913) for the Greek Air Force as a seaplane Hydro Biplane Type S. Wingspan 15.25 m, length 9.45 m. Armament formed a machine gun Lewis caliber 7.7 mm shooting direction forward. A total of six machines were ordered. Before the start of the war, four aircraft were completed. After the start of the war, the aircraft were confiscated by the British Admiralty and put into service with the Royal Naval Air Service (R.N.A.S.).

The version of the aircraft with a conventional landing gear, twin wheels with skis, was referred to as the Gun Bus. In the ground version, the aircraft was equipped with an eight-cylinder water-cooled Sunbeam engine with an output of 150 horsepower, which powered a four-bladed thruster propeller with a diameter of 2.9 meters. The fuselage was extended by 45 cm to 9.9 m. The gondola was completely redesigned, the pilot sat in the back and the shooter equipped with a machine gun Lewis in front. In this form, the machine, although one of the few at the time equipped with a machine gun, as a fighter very difficult to use due to its low speed and size. The vast majority of aircraft, even unarmed ones, managed to escape Gun Bus due to their higher speed. The machines operated from a base in Hendon, one aircraft was stationed in Dunkirk, France.

The later bomber version again had a redesigned gondola. In the new layout, the cockpit was in front. There was a vista on the floor that made it easier to aim during the bombing. Four bomb hangers were placed on the lower wing.

Due to the rapid development in the construction of new aircraft, the Gun Bus was soon used only as a school aircraft in the training of new pilots.

A total of 42 pieces were ordered. Twelve aircraft serial no. 801-806 supplied by Sopwith, 30 pieces s/n 3833 - 3862 was to be supplied by Robey & amp; What. however, only 17 pieces were delivered, the rest was delivered as spare parts.

Very few records have been preserved of the operational deployment of these aircraft.
