USA - AN/ASQ-153 Pave Spike

the AN/ASQ-153 Pave Spike

Suspended container designed to search for ground targets, their monitoring and radiation for guidance of bombs with the laser guidance system in combat activities in the day.

Project Pave Spike started in may 1972. A few containers still managed to get to southeast Asia, when there were to serve at the 497th TFS falling under the 8th TFW at the base in the thai Ubonu. To their combat deployment, however, probably not.

For the needs of the USAF produced by Westinghouse between the years 1974 to 1979 a total of 156 of these containers, which were intended for use on airplanes F-4D and F-4E Phantom II (for carrying Pave Spike were modified 106 Pheasant version D and 211 variants E, in the case of the version F-4E have been adjusted machine the series of Block 36 to 45, which included the serial numbers 67-xxxx 68-xxxx and 69-xxxx, in which there has been, inter alia, to the modernisation of their weapon the computer AN/ASQ-91 to a standard AN/ASQ-91B). Containers Pave Spike in the arsenal replaced the older AN/AVQ-10 Pave Knife.

AN/ASQ-153 is equipped with an infrared sensor, which limits its deployment to only the activity of the day. The image of the terrain captured by the television camera in the sensor head of the container is projected on the screen of the operator of weapons systems (WSO) in the rear cabin of the Phantom. After identification of the electronic branding goals with a deliberate axis of the camera can container target automatically track and irradiate the laser.

The container was on the aircraft the F-4 podvěšován to the left front shaft for PLŘS AIM-7 Sparrow.

A simplified version of the Pave Spike marked AN/AVQ-23E used the british air force. In his lines to await deployment during the gulf War (1991). AN/AVQ-23E, there were used planes Buccaneer With.2B.
