Brief History:
Arado Ar 440 begins to emerge in early 1942, designers learned from the failure of the previous type Ar 240, which was produced in only a small number and although it was constantly improved and modified, the whole project was completed at the behest of RLM. The last few projects have not even been implemented.

For the new type Ar 440, the designers took the basis of the Ar 240 and modified it to a new form, the motor units had to provide sufficient power, so high-altitude engines were selected DB 603G, for which the maximum power could be increased by injecting nitrous oxide into the engine intake. This device was used to increase performance at high altitudes. Power was transmitted by four-bladed automatic propellers VDM. The Ar 440 was slightly larger overall than the previous type. It was completed in July 1942 and was flown immediately. Test pilots spoke positively about the new fighter-bomber. The first prototype was soon supplemented in tests by three more prototypes. The tests took place in Rechlin in early 1943, and although the test pilots spoke enthusiastically about the new aircraft, it was not included in the Luftwaffe armament.

The start of serial production was reconsidered one and a half years later, at a time when an emergency program for the development of fighter aircraft was to be established. However, the Arado Ar 440 did not become a standard twin-engine fighter Luftwaffe because compared to the winning type, which was Dornier Do 335 Pfeil, was already obsolete and Pfeil had larger power reserves.
