Máriačalád (kláštor)

The monastery of the Mariánská Čelaď (Marian family) originally from the 15th century now stands in a semi-dilapidated state in the cadastre of the village of Veľké Lovce in southern Slovakia. It was the seat of the Pauline Order, which rebuilt it in the 18th century in Baroque style. It included a large two-tower church, thermal baths and a botanical garden with thermophilic plants. It was a well-known pilgrimage site. A rich network of escape tunnels, which were used as part of the warning system during the wars with the Turks, is still preserved beneath the monastery (it has not been properly mapped to this day and no thorough archaeological research has been carried out there). Unfortunately, in the mid-19th century, the monastery was unfortunately burnt down after a lightning strike and was never restored to its former glory. After 1948, a state estate was created there, which used the main and secondary buildings in a rather unsustainable way. In the dining room they cut out the ceiling with frescoes to accommodate a machine for grinding rye for the cattle. Some rooms were used as offices and others for housing cattle. According to my mother's recollection, the thermal spring was still flowing in the monastery grounds certainly around 1960. The spring dried up most probably in connection with the construction of a thermal bath in nearby Podhajska. In spite of the above, the monastery was still in a relatively decent condition at the end of the 1980s. Although the roof of the building was partially restored after the revolution in the early 1990s, the worst part of the current state of the building is the theft of the people from the surrounding area. In recent days, however, positive information has been circulating in the press that this cultural monument is to be restored with financial assistance from the European Union. The church has already had the statue of the Virgin Mary, which people rescued from the church façade decades ago, restored. The statue now stands in Velké Lovce and should one day be returned to its original place. In connection with the restoration, documentation on the original architectural design of the monastery is being sought.
