The M46 tank was a direct continuation of the M26.

The shortcoming of the M26 was its powerplant and transmission, identical to the 10 tonne lighter M4 Sherman. It was therefore decided to upgrade the tanks to the M26. The original designation of this modernized version was M26E2.

The modernization consisted of the installation of a GM CD-850-1 transmission and a Continental AV-1790-1 740 hp engine. The new transmission combined the functions of gearbox, brakes and steering in one - this arrangement lasted in American tanks for the next 30 years. Other changes included the use of a cannon with an ejector and a new single muzzle brake (as opposed to the double on the M26). An M83 optical sight was also added. Ten tanks were ordered in this form under the designation T40, and were completed in August 1949.

Before these tanks were completed, the upgraded M26s were redesignated M46 on 30 July 1948. An order for 800 new tanks was placed and plans were made to rebuild 1,215 of the older M26. The production M46s had the Continental AV-1790-5 engine. The same document also gave the M46 the nickname General Patton.

After the outbreak of the Korean War, many M26s were shipped to Korea and were not enough for the ongoing upgrade to the M46. Due to the obsolescence of the M26/M46 design, it was also decided (apart from a small batch of M46A1) not to start building any more M46s. Plans for conversion were therefore cancelled in favour of building a new derivative type of M47.

The first combat-used M46s were those of the 6th Tank Battalion, which arrived in Korea on 8 August 1950.

M26 Pershing (73 ∆ / C 22), Bovington Tank Museum, 2003 a 2004.
