Sopwith Scooter

Tom Sopwith and Harry Hawker were flying enthusiasts long before World War I, when the Sopwith factory was just a small company. This passion did not desert them even in the hectic times of producing hundreds of aircraft for the British Army. It was for this reason that the Sopwith Scooter type was created in 1918. Officially, the concept of a parasol wing was tested on it, unofficially it was Harry Hawker's pastime. Apparently Hawker was intrigued by the French Morane-Saulnier AI and its peculiar wing. The fuselage and tail surfaces of the Sopwith Camel were used for its construction. The wing was a low-set, twin-beam wing with the aforementioned parasol-like structure. This was needed to stiffen the narrow profile of the wing. A 130 hp Clerget 9B rotary engine served as the powerplant. The aircraft was badged as Sopwith Monoplane No 1, but like every Sopwith aircraft was given the name Scooter. Harry Hawker used it as a personal transport aircraft, but also for aerobatics during air shows. The Scooter became the template for his military version of Swalls. Only one example was produced, but it continued to fly as a sport aircraft until 1928.
