CRDA (CANT) Z.1018 Leone

Origin and development:

In the late 1930s, Regia Aeronautica became increasingly aware that it needed a modern and fast medium bomber in its state. Although it had several types of medium bombers, they were mostly three-engine machines like Savoia- Marchetti SM.79, CANT Z. 1007, or twin-engine Fiat BR.20. These bombers slowly became obsolete and it was necessary to look for their adequate replacement. Some airlines in Italy have decided to modernize existing machines, Fiat has introduced a slightly improved version of the Fiat BR.20bis, Savoia-Marchetti has again Savoia-Marchetti SM.84, he did not differ much from his predecessor, underwent only a few minimal changes, speed and load capacity was almost the same as the previous type. The only company, namely CRDA, began work on a completely new aircraft. This aircraft began in the design office of the Italian airline CRDA ( Cantiere Riuniti dell Adriatico), based in Monfalcone near Trieste, formerly also known as CANT ( Cantiere Navale di Triestino). The design of this aircraft was the well-known Italian designer Filippo Zappata, who worked as the chief engineer of CRDA from 1933 to 1942, then moved to a competitor Breda (all aircraft in which F. Zappata participated were marked with a capital letter Z, as well as was also in the aircraft CRDA Z.1018 Leone). An elegant low-flying aircraft was created on the drawing boards of the design office, with two engines placed in the engine nacelles. Work on the first prototype began in 1939. First a model was built and then in the autumn of 1939 an all-wood structure, which was blown in the wind tunnel. Already these tests have shown the good aerodynamic properties of the future machine. The first flight of this all-wood prototype took place on October 9, 1939, the prototype (MM.467) was piloted by a test pilot Mario Stoppani.

After successful tests and flying of an all-wood prototype, until the end of 1939 he flew around 10 flight hours, the prototype was flown during 1940 to Barbieri Airport in Guidonia-Montecelio near Rome, where the test institute (Centro Sperimentale) was located. After successful tests in Guidonia-Montecelio, Regia Aeronautica ordered in 1941 the production of 300 serial machines marked as CRDA Z.1018A. In 1942, construction began on a prototype of the second, which was designated as CRDA Z.1018M (MM.507). The second prototype already had an all-metal construction, a slightly elongated fuselage, modified cockpit and mainly had a simple SOP (the first prototype had a double SOP), was flown on June 18, 1942 test pilot Mario Stoppani. Shortly after the flight of the second prototype Z.1018M, another 5 prototypes were produced, each of which was powered by a different power unit. These were engines of various brands and types, Piaggio P.XII RC.35 with an output of 1,007 kW, Piaggio P.XV RC.45 with an output of 1,125 kW, Fiat RA.1050 RC.58 "Tifone" with an output of 1,085 kW and Alfa-Romeo 135 RC.32 "Tornado" with an output of 1,012 kW. In the end, Alfa-Romeo 135 RC.32 engines were installed in the aircraft, simply because a sufficient number of them had already been produced and were thus easily accessible. Production of serial machines gradually began, but to a separate degree, which Italy signed in September 1943, only a limited number of them were produced. In the end, only 20 machines were produced, 5 prototypes, 10 zero series machines (MM.24290 - MM.24299), and 5 I. series machines (MM.24824 - MM.24828).

This medium bomber got to the units too late and did not even intervene in the war. It was not until July 7, 1943 that several machines were assigned to combat units, namely the status of the 262nd Squadron and the 263rd Squadron, then deployed at the airport in Vicenza. The CRDA Z.1018 Leone aircraft was actually the last type designed by chief engineer F. Zappat, who then left for the rival company Breda during 1942. Even before his departure, F. Zappata worked on several versions of the Z.1018, a torpedo plane (powered by Fiat A-83 RC.24 engines), a heavy fighter aircraft (armed with 7 20 mm cannons and three 12.7 mm machine guns), night fighter aircraft (equipped with German radar SN-2 Lichtenstein) and finally an anti-tank version (armed with a 37 mm cannon). However, these versions remained only at the project stage. One Z.1018 aircraft was reportedly tested at the Erprobungstelle in Rechlin, Germany.

Construction:

CRDA Z.1018 Leone was an elegant all-metal self-supporting low-flying aircraft, with two engines housed in engine nacelles. The machine was equipped with a classic fully retractable chassis. The front landing gear legs were attached and retracted into the engine nacelles. The aircraft had a single SOP (the first prototype had a double SOP). It was powered by two types of engines. First it was a two-star air-cooled eighteen-cylinder Piaggio P. XII RC.35 with an output of 1,007 kW, and then a star eighteen-cylinder Alfa-Romeo 135 RC.32 "Tornado" with an output of 1,012 kW, which was eventually fitted to mass-produced machines. The engines were powered by three-bladed metal adjustable propellers. The speed of the aircraft was 524 km/h at an altitude of 4,500 m. The armament of the aircraft consisted of three machine guns Breda-SAFAT caliber 12.7 mm, one movable located in the dorsal turret type Lanciani Delta, the other also movable located in the enforcement under the fuselage and the third fixed located at the root of the left wing. Another two movable machine guns Breda-SAFAT caliber 7.7 mm, located in side shooting stations. The aircraft carried a bomb cargo weighing 1,250 kg to a distance of 1,335 km, the range without bomb cargo was around 2,000 km.

The CRDA Z.1018 Leone aircraft never received a major combat deployment, but it was still one of the successful designs among medium bombers.

The first photo shows the first all-wood prototype Z.1018 (MM.467), the difference is evident in the construction of the SOP, the others are already serial machines.
