CRDA (CANT) Z.1012

History:
In 1937, the Italian Ministry of Aviation (Ministero dell´Aeronautica) decided to award a contract to Italian airlines for the construction of an aircraft to transport important diplomatic figures. Fillipo Zappata, the chief engineer of the CRDA (CANT) factory, responded to this order with the Cant Z.1012 construction. The plane was to fly for Italian embassies overseas - in the United States and Brazil. The designer of the F. Zappata aircraft remained loyal to the Italian design school and designed an all-wood three-engine low-flying aircraft. The first prototype was flown in May 1938 in Monfalcone by a test pilot of the factory M. Stoppani. This prototype and two other machines produced were powered by four-cylinder Alfa-Romeo 110-I in-line engines. Other manufactured machines were powered by more powerful six-cylinder Alfa-Romeo 115 in-line engines. In addition to the engines, the pilot space of these machines also changed slightly. The two planes really served their purpose and flew for embassies in the United States and Brazil. Other aircraft flew in the state of Regia Aeronautica (one was the marshal's personal aircraft Balboa and the other had Bruno Mussolini), both aircraft had a civil registration mark (I-IEIA and I-BRUO). The last two manufactured aircraft flew for the Italian airline LATI. The fate of two aircraft overseas was interesting, after the declaration of war to the United States, the first machine was interned at the airport Bolling Field in the United States, the second machine was interned in the deposit of the Swiss Embassy in Brazil. In 1943, the aircraft serving in Italy became very obsolete and therefore their engines were dismantled, in the same year they were destroyed.
The Cant Z.1012 was a three-engine self-supporting low-flying aircraft, all-wood structures covered with canvas. The chassis was retractable. It was powered by three four-cylinder air-cooled in-line engines of the Alfa-Romeo 110-I type with an output of 120 hp. Later versions were powered by six-cylinder air-cooled in-line engines of the Alfa-Romeo 115 type with an output of 185 hp. The fuel supply was 640 liters, located in four fuel tanks in the wing. The plane flew without weapons.
