Naval Aircraft Factory PN-9

The second of two ordered flying boats PN-8 was completed with a modified rudder, Packard 1A-2500 engines in new nacelles and increased tank capacity. The completed and tested PN-8 A6799 was then rebuilt to the same standard. During the tests on May 1 and 2, 1925, during a test flight over Philadelphia, the crew of C. H. Schildhauer and J. R. Kyle set a new record in endurance, when they lasted in the air for 28 hours, 35 minutes and 27 seconds. This performance became the impetus for a large record flight, which was to be carried out by both PN-9 together with an experimental aircraft PB-1 between San Francisco and Hawaii. Shortly after the start of September 1, 1925, one of the PN-9 had to return due to an engine failure, PB- 1 didn't start at all. The crew led by Cmdr John Rodgers flew most of the route on the last PN-9, due to a navigation error however, they ran out of fuel prematurely and had to make an emergency landing. After ten days, they sailed (from the cover of the wings they created a sail, which they stretched between the engines) in sight of the island of Kaui, where they were spotted by an R-4 submarine and towed to port. Although the flight was not completed, the calculated flight length (3409.8 km) was enough to be recognized as a record.
The aircraft was repaired and returned to service, but in 1928 he was hit by an engine failure on a flight to South America, which forced pilot Byron Connell and his crew to make an emergency landing in the Caribbean, where they spent several days before being rescued. After picking up the crew, it was decided that the PN-9 was too far from the coast to be towed, so it was sunk by gunfire.
The second PN-9 was destroyed on March 31, 1927 at the Navassa Archipelago in the West Indies.
